Using Technology to Keep Baby Safe
Posted by Our Baby Our World on 1/17/2014 to Announcements
Babies born today have entered a world where the benefits of technology are ever present. Sophisticated testing methods have aided in the development of products that are safer and more reliable than ever before seen. Technological advances have been instrumental in reducing the number of childhood injuries and deaths by helping manufacturers come up with better product designs and testing methods. Safety features developed to monitor their babies through the use of handheld devices is a great asset to parents.

Technology has led to new safety options for parents that replicate the environment provided by attentive caregivers from a remote location. Monitoring cameras with footage accessible online or through third parties have been available for years. Thanks to new advances, baby monitoring apps are now available to parents with Smartphones and tablets to access, in real time, video and audio captured by the camera. There are at least three products currently on the market that makes footage available through the use of handheld devices. The use of WIFI or Bluetooth connectivity and unlimited range make these products convenient. The affordable price of the phone apps and the product usefulness beyond infant years make them must haves.

• In addition to displaying video and audio, The Best Baby Monitor app, which is available to iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users, enables baby to hear parent’s voice remotely (with the use of another device) and also plays lullabies.
• The iSitter app is available to iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad users and can monitor the audio in real time but sends images in 30 second snapshots. If the parent device becomes disconnected, an alarm will sound.
• The Baby Monitor by CodeGoo app can assist in baby supervision by placing a phone call to a selected number if it detects noise from the baby’s room. The device is placed by the sleeping baby and provides video monitoring. Parents are alerted when baby wakes or begins to stir.

Nothing beats adult supervision and, of course, common sense safety practices should always be employed. A monitoring device with unlimited range means parents can retain a connection to their babies even when their children are in the company of other caregivers, and the parents are miles away. For many parents, the peace of mind that can be attained through this virtual attachment is priceless.
